1. A Plan for getting what you both want out of it.
I know you’ve heard it – All Lead Magnets are NOT created equal.
=> I can’t tell you the amount of coaching calls I’ve been on where a business owner is creating a lead magnet for the sake of growing their list because “that’s what they’re supposed to do”.
It’s like they are just out for a Sunday drive, with no particular place to go in mind. I mean I love those drives, a fresh hot tea and my husband driving us around while I look at all the big houses and daydream.
But that’s not how I want to grow my email list. I want people on my list who are actually the right fit for the thing I’m selling.
So what’s the secret sauce for an amazing lead magnet?
It’s all about alignment – your end goal and your audience’s current needs.
Start by pinpointing the destination: which of your offers is the lead magnet funneling into?
Is it a premium coaching program or an exclusive online course?
Now, think about where your ideal audience currently stands in their journey. Someone who just started their fertility journey is in a very different place than someone on their third round of IVF.
Your lead magnet should be useful to them and having them say “YES” based on where they’re at. Please don’t tell me they could be anywhere in their journey, if that’s really what you think – then you need to dig deeper.
This isn’t about casting a massively wide net; it’s about attracting the right fish – the ones who are ready and eager for what you have to offer.

2. A system for easy setup & signups
While most online busines owner’s get stuck on that “What should my lead magnet be” part, this next part usually brings in the serious stress and overwhelm.
THE TECH… (Queue the bom, bom, bom music that usually signifies something bad is happening).
We’ve all had those moments where we’re trying to do something new tech wise in our business and we’re about 3 seconds away from throwing the laptop out the window.
Our bodies are tense, our blood is boiling, we’ve already yelled at the screen 6 times and God help us if a kid comes in right now to ask for a snack.
Raise your hand if you’ve been there. (I have and I actually like tech…)
So when it comes to what you need tech wise to get your lead magnet up and running, let’s recap what’s needed in the most basic sense:
- A Lead Magnet Sign Up Page (Also known as an Opt-in Page)
- An Email Service Provider (ESP) to deliver the freebie to their inbox.
- A CRM tool to manage and organize the subscribers that sign up for your freebie.
Now, here is where most online business owner’s go wrong from a tech perspective.
They choose to use a free tool or app and find themselves trying to create each of the pieces from scratch.
=> They’re desigining to opt-in page from scratch with no clue on what to include to get people to sign up.
=> They’re trying to build the automation that will deliver the lead magnet to the person that signed up.
=> Then they’re stuck staring at a blank page while trying to write the emails that the new subscriber will get when they sign up.
And don’t forget the hours of Youtube videos and Google searches in between – trying to figure it all out.

=> I’m a firm believer that learning through failing is the best way to create something great!
So once you’ve nailed Step #1 above, how can you make sure you’re good to go in actually attracting your audience to sign up?
