Blog Post Tips: What to do before you hit publish

So you want to publish some killer content…. I don’t blame you!  There is no point in working your ass off on a blog post if no one is going to read it!

So other than writing a great, detailed and researched blog post, what else can you do to increase the odds of your post going viral?  Well I’ve got 9 strategies you can implement to give your post its best shot!

I know these work because I have seen the success myself with my own posts and most of these are all recommended by top bloggers as well!

Read through the list once and take some mental or even written notes, and then open up one of your blog posts in another tab and read through it a second time.  Go through each strategy and cross reference it with your post to make sure you have made the most of each strategy.

Here we go!

Blog Post Tips: #1

Make sure you've added value

This will always be number one and the full on “raison d’être” of your blog post.

If you want people to read your content, you need to make sure you are giving them value.  How do you give them value?  Well, make sure you are solving a problem for them, answering a question, providing direction…

People are busy and don’t usually read blog posts just because they have nothing better to do.  You will get them to read your content when you are providing some type of value to them.

Ask yourself what the purpose of your post is, and make sure you stick to that purpose in a clean and straightforward manner.

Always Optimize for SEO

Yes, we have all heard about SEO…. are you bored yet?

Trust me, it bores the crap out of me. If I could pay someone to do two things for me on my blogs, it would be to handle SEO and proofread everything for me.  At least with SEO, there is an amazing free tool/plug in that you can use that will change your life!

Yoast, baby, Yoast!

Have you used it before? It’s an amazing WordPress plugin called Yoast SEO.  I get pretty excited once I have written a post and I have a bunch of green bullet marks telling me I have done well with my SEO. I’m sure it’s the same, or will be the same, for you.

If you have no idea what I’m talking about, I’ll explain.  The Yoast plug in literally analyzes your posts and pages as you are developing them.  It will very clearly tell you where you have done a great job with SEO and where you can improve.

It makes SEO painless once you get the hang of it.  Here is a screen shot of what it looks like on the back end of this post as I am writing it:

As you can see above, under the Keyword section, you will get either a green, red or orange colour bullet point and it tells you exactly what you did right or what you need to improve on. It’s almost fool proof.

It also has a whole “readability” section which tells you how readable your blog post actually is beyond general SEO. AMAZING.

I seriously could not live without this tool!

Blog Post Tips: #3

Proofread and Review for Errors

Like I mentioned above….  I SUCK AT PROOFREADING!

If you have read many of my blog posts, you probably already know this…. it just isn’t my strong suit.

You can probably figure out why this is soo important, but just in case, I’ll spell it out for you…. ha!  Knee slapper!

Having a properly edited and error free blog post will promote professionalism and encourage confidence from your reader.

There are some tools that will help you out with your spelling such as Grammarly, but my problem isn’t knowing how to spell a word, it’s that I type as fast as I can to keep up with my brain and words sometimes get put together that don’t make complete sense or I forget some important punctuation.

Hopefully, you can forgive me.

Regardless of where you stand on this, make sure to do your best to proofread your content a few times to maximize your chances of spotting the errors.

When all else fails, you can always hire a proofreader to look over your posts.

Blog Post Tips: #4

Link to Your Other Content

This is a must.  You want readers to stay on your site for as long as possible, and remain engaged by going from one post to another.

The easiest way to ensure that happens is to link to other content throughout your posts.  Don’t just throw a few related posts in a list at the end of your content.  Take the time to link to it within your content and explain why that other post might be valuable to them.

You’ll increase your chances of the reader actually clicking the link and reading multiple posts on your site.

MAKE SURE to select to “open page in new window” when you are linking to another post.  You want them to be able to open the new post to read after they are finished with the current post.

Blog Post Tips: #5

Create Multiple "Pinnable" Images

We all know that Pinterest is THE top referrer these days for most Blog Traffic and you need to take advantage of that!

Let’s say you are just starting out and only have three blog posts. If you are only doing one “pinnable” image, you only have three possible pins for someone to find, click on and then make it to your site.

Now let’s say you do three branded images with different text, for each blog post… that’s 9… I’m sure you get where I’m going with this!

You also never know which call to action will appeal most to people so you are increasing your odds of resonating with different people.

It also gives you an opportunity over time to get excellent feedback on which types of pins and wording that your audience relates to.  The number of re-pins per post will make it very clear!

Blog Post Tips: #6

Encourage Reader Engagement

I know this might sound silly, but it’s never a bad idea to ask your readers to share your content.  Sometimes, it just doesn’t occur to people to hit the share button unless you ask them.

Second, ask your readers a question at the end of your post and ask them to answer in the comments.  Not only will comments help you out for SEO, it will also let you get to know your audience on a more personal level and allow you to pull new content ideas based on their responses.

After all, the whole point of this is to provide value to your audience, right?  Consider any comments you get as a GIFT!

Blog Post Tips: #7

Keep Your Text Light and Legible

In my 4th month of blogging, I made a huge change to the way I was formatting blog posts.  I started to notice a trend among top bloggers in how they were writing their posts.

As you can see from how this post is written, the recommended formatting is short sentences and small paragraphs so as to not overwhelm the reader, and make it much easier to read through the post.

It also makes it much easier to skim through the post if the reader is looking for specific content.

I also find it one thousand times easier to show some personality and one-liners… hopefully you agree!

Sadly, I had to go back and re-edit all of my earlier blog posts from massive paragraphs, but it was totally worth it in the end!

Blog Post Tips: #8

Blog Post Tips: #9

Link to External Content

Why the heck would you ever want to send people away from your site?  That sounds crazy, huh?

Well, much to your dismay, it’s actually very important for SEO ranking.

Linking (make sure to have it open in another tab) to authority content will help your rankings in SEO and will also help you to add value for your readers.

You can’t know everything and you can’t possibly write about everything, so try and link to authority sites on topics that complement yours.

Plus, you could always be gaining some love from top people in your industry when you link to their content, so this is never a bad thing!

Here’s an EXCELLENT article from Moz.com on why you should link to external content!

See what I did there…..

I hope you found these blog post tips helpful, and I’m sure they will help you kill it with your next blog post!
